Bald as Kojak for Shearing

An opportunity in the WA sheep breeding market has been identified by BreedersBEST to include non-shearing genetics in its suite of packages.

And the resulting composite breed from the company’s research has been aptly branded the Kojak after the bald 1970s TV detective.

It is widely recognised that sheep producing no or minimal amounts of wool and shedding their fleece annually will significantly reduce onfarm labour needs.

New Focus on Sheep Genetics

BreedersBEST has formed a breeding panel involving innovative industry leaders, to plot the future direction of its genetics programs for both the BreedersBEST composite prolifics and non shearing genetics.

A one day workshop was held at Kojonup this week attended by Murdoch University meat scientist David Pethick, Agriculture Department geneticist Johan Greef, John Foss, Marketing Edge, Narrogin researcher and producer Sarah Wiese and Gnowangerup lamb producer Bill O’Keefe.

Exceptional lambing results

BreedersBEST F1prolific ewe lambs achieved an exceptional marking of 117pc at the Evergreen Grazing Company’s Kojonup property at only 15 months of age.

The ewe lambs were bred by Trevor Cole at Bruce Rock by using BreedersBEST composite Prolific rams over his Pooginook-blood ewes.

BreedersBEST changes lamb production

The projected decline for Australian lamb production is said to be 10 percent for the year 2007, and while sheep farmers struggle to increase the profitability of their sheep in both the wool and meat markets they are being urged to consider the possibility of producing animals for meat purposes only.

BreedersBEST, an alliance seeking to capture the full potential of the growing market for premium lamb, have introduced a new and innovative approach which was presented to Gnowangerup farmers last week.

New man for BreedersBEST
21 June 2007
The BreedersBEST lamb production program has made another step forward with a new appointment to the team.

The program, which was launched last year at the well known Genstock breeding centre in Kojonup, owned by Craig and Liz Heggaton, has appointed Pierre Syben from New Zealand as the commercial and operations manager.
